Loyola University Brews Up a New Model for Sustainability Courses
As they enter the third semester of the Solutions to Environmental Problems course, a team of Loyola faculty and students is discovering that interdisciplinary, project-based courses about sustainability can be life-changing.

Butte College Going Carbon Neutral Without the Credits 
Among community colleges, Butte has come the closest to its goal of carbon-neutral by 2015, with the approval of a 4 MW solar system which will power the entire campus.

Universities, EPA Work to Reduce Urban Heat Island Effect
Large swaths of concrete and buildings affect local climate and reduce energy efficiency, particularly in the summer. Several collaborative research teams are on the case.

Within the next year, the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls hopes to break ground on a project that would tap one of the most promising, and overlooked, forms of renewable power: geothermal energy—the free heat that emanates from Earth’s molten core. Other universities are following suit with similar technology.
