NWF Action Fund Endorses Gary Peters for U.S. Senate
"Gary Peters is a proven leader for conservation for Michigan and across the nation, combining a passion for the Great Lakes and Michigan's land and water with a common-sense pragmatism that gets things done."
At an event in Lansing today, the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund announced its endorsement of Rep. Gary Peters (MI-14) for U.S. Senate in Michigan. Rep. Peters has been a leader in supporting the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, helping bring $1.6 billion in federal Great Lakes funding that supports over 1,000 restoration projects on the ground and in the water.
“Gary Peters is a proven leader for conservation for Michigan and across the nation, combining a passion for the Great Lakes and Michigan's land and water with a common-sense pragmatism that gets things done,” said Collin O’Mara, board member of the NWF Action Fund and president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, the Action Fund’s 501(c)3 sister organization, who traveled to Lansing to announce the endorsement. “Throughout his career, he has demonstrated that he can work across the aisle to find solutions because he fundamentally understands the deep connection between the health of the Great Lakes and the health of Michigan's economy.”
"I am humbled to have the support of the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund, which does so much to conserve our Great Lakes and make sure we protect our natural resources,” said Peters. “The Great Lakes support hundreds of thousands of jobs in Michigan. Keeping the Great Lakes vibrant and healthy is critical to growing our economy and creating new jobs, as well as recreation and fishing. As Michigan's next U.S. Senator, I will continue fighting to make sure our Great Lakes are protected now and for future generations."
Rep. Peters has proven his leadership on a range of conservation issues:
- Restoring the Great Lakes: As a vocal supporter of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and efforts to fight toxic algae outbreaks and the spread of Asian Carp, Peters is a champion of Great Lakes issues.
- Revitalizing Michigan’s economy with clean energy. Peters has led initiatives to promote energy efficiency and to help Detroit develop the next generation of made-in-America fuel-efficient vehicles.
- Protecting Michigan from petcoke spills. Peters responded to a petroleum coke spill in Lake Michigan by introducing the Petroleum Coke Transparency and Public Health Study Act and calling for a federal investigation to review the best practices for transporting and storing petcoke.
“The Great Lakes are the foundation of Michigan’s way of life, our economy, and our very identity. If the Great Lakes are healthy, so is Michigan; if they’re not, then we all suffer,” said Andy Buchsbaum, interim executive director of the NWF Action Fund and a Michigan resident. “Restoring the vitality of the Great Lakes is central to Gary Peters’ vision for a healthier and better Michigan.”
An estimated 4.4 million people took part in fishing, hunting and other wildlife-related recreation in Michigan generating $6.1 billion in economic activity in 2011, according to the most recent U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey.
