Salmon in Peril Under New Plan
The Bush administration's recovery plan fails to address the main threat to salmon, requirements of the Endangered Species Act, recent court rulings, and cultural and economic preservation of entire communities.
Salmon recovery is not an option, it is a requirement. Federal agency recommendations for the "new" Salmon Recovery Plan have recently been endorsed by the Bush administration. Despite warnings from U.S. District Judge James Redden, the proposed actions have failed, yet again, to include strategies for adequate salmon recovery as specified in the Endangered Species Act. As they march down this path, disregarding the scientific evidence and opposition by salmon advocates, the fish count continues to dwindle, and with it, the linked economy and significant pieces of American culture. It will take the combined efforts of our communities to improve the plight of salmon. Speak up for Salmon!
