Wolves and Lynx in the Northeast

Cross-border Strategy Developed

NWF is prepared on an on-going basis to work closely with US F&W Service in responding to wolf sightings. A cross-border strategy, with Quebec and other interests, allows for an implementation program that will cultivate relationships and partnerships toward an eco-regional approach to wolf recovery in this region of Canada and the U.S. A research and study of various in-place mechanisms through federal and provincial governmental agencies is being considered, and it would promote and support cross border conservation of long ranging terrestrial species, especially for wolves. The outcome goal of the restoration of wolves, one of NWF’s iconic species, is to secure further protections of dispersing wolves, and lynx, from Quebec. In concert with this program there is on-going engagement in VT, NH and ME in supporting and assisting them in implementation of the state wildlife action plan, specifically the work related to the wolf.

Maine's Plum Creek Development Plan for Moosehead Lake has resulted in NWF working closely with its Maine affiliate, the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Maine Audubon and others, to provide expert testimony in opposition to Plum Creek's current plan and it's likely impact on wildlife habitat, especially that of the Canada lynx. NWF and other wildlife biologists conclude that Canada lynx will be one of the most seriously imperiled species as a result of Plum Creek’s proposal. The proposed project area is in the middle of Canada lynx habitat. If built as proposed, it could likely cause the disruption of the current lynx population as a result of direct habitat destruction and road mortality. With traffic increases and habitat fragmentation, Plum Creek’s extensive rezoning and development proposal would significantly harm the region’s beautiful natural character and important wildlife habitat, including that of common loons and native brook trout.
