Atlantic Menhaden, also known as bunker or pogy, have been called “the most important fish in the sea”. That is because so many marine species including humpback whales, striped bass, bluefish, osprey, eagle, pelicans and dolphin seek them out for their energy-rich fat content.

Unfortunately so does one commercial fishing company: Omega Protein. Omega grinds menhaden down to be used in dog food, as a dietary supplement and for fertilizer. They also catch the vast majority of menhaden along the Atlantic coast, jeopardizing the ecosystem from Maine to Florida.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is voting this fall on a more responsible management plan for menhaden that would keep more fish in the ocean to benefit the entire ecosystem. Voice your support for protecting menhaden and the whales and other species that prey on menhaden by signing our petition today.
